Depression and anxiety are major issues in society. Many people are scared to speak up or talk about their feelings, and it affects more people than we realize. Most people plaster a smile on their faces and say they are okay. Many people joke and laugh with their friends at school or work, even though they only want to go home, lock the door, and cry. We view people with depression and anxiety as needy or weak when we are very similar. We are all human. We all face the world’s troubles together and should give each other a helping hand instead of bringing others down. This is step one in solving issues with people’s views of themselves.
Social media is a primary source of angst for people. Consider a commercial for a hair product. As a girl, I see this tall, beautiful model as our appearance standard. What if this is not how God intended us to be? We feel unworthy if we don’t have a “Barbie Doll ” figure with blond hair and blue eyes. We begin to change ourselves to meet the societal standards placed unrealistically upon us. Hair Dye, colored contact lenses, and Spanx will give us the desired look. Girls especially put their worth on a male’s opinion of them. Many females base their status on whether or not they have a boyfriend. If she does, she is a step above the rest and is superior because a male thinks she is pretty. If she doesn’t have a boyfriend, she thinks she’s not good enough; in reality, she’s too good. Ridding ourselves of unrealistic social standards is the first step to eradicating depression and anxiety caused by the sinful ways of the world in which we live.
Another source of depression and anxiety is the standards required of us in the school system. We all have a plan for our lives. Those of us who are planners have planned out every step of the way. These same people also happen to be perfectionists. If one little thing goes awry in our “master plan,” we feel our entire course is thrown off, and we might as well quit because we will get nowhere. All of this could be brought on by a C on an Algebra 2 test. College becomes increasingly stressful the older we get. We must have above a 4.0, or we are a disappointment. We must be involved in the community, or we are a waste. We must be involved in three or more extracurricular activities, or we are lazy. If we reach these standards, there will be something else to strive for unrealistically. Don’t even mention the SAT to an overworked high school junior. We, as a society, need to say it’s okay to slow down to the students. We need to learn to believe it’s not only okay not to be perfect, but it is human.
While feeling depressed and anxious is a thing many students face, feeling like it is winning is not. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Being able to unwind after a stressful day is necessary. The first step to change is recognizing that your day didn’t go as planned. It is important to say I will try again tomorrow. Whenever I feel down, I think about the sun. I think of the sun as my guardian. The sun says, “your day didn’t go as planned? That’s okay. We can sleep and try again in the morning”. As silly as this sounds, it helps ground me and show that I can keep going, even if the world is against me. One thing I wish teenagers today could feel is peace. I hope they know it is okay to feel the effects of depression and anxiety, but the “we can sleep and try again in the morning” counts.
